Believe it or not, my nickname is 'Snuggles'! I guess my humans felt this aptly describes my personality. I'm a large couch potato at heart.
With that said, you probably would like to know my heritage. Well originally, we were bred from the Alaskan Malamute, the German Shepherd, the English Mastiff, the Anatolian Shepherd and Great Pyrenees lines. I know, you're probably thinking how ironic that is, that such a docile dog evolved from this selective breeding, but it's true.
The idea behind this crossbreeding was to develop a large dog, but without the working behaviors that often accompany the larger breeds. In other words, to have a breed that could live with limited boundaries and minimal exercise. With the Alsatian Shepalute, that's what you get, a large companion dog disposition and the looks of a wolf. Now that's pretty cool--to resemble the Wolf.
Our general nature is that of calm and we possess a low working drive. Play is generally not our thing unless you encourage us to play.
I know it sounds peculiar, but our breed prefers snuggling and being close to its master. We can be aloof with strangers or children that we don't know. We definitely can be described as a loving dog and we're perfect for anyone who appreciates a large breed but doesn't want to be drug through the streets during walks.
If you were to drive off without me and accidentally leave a door or gate open, no worries-- Alsatian Shepalutes show no desire to roam or wander off. We prefer to stay home and be within the sight of family--or wait on the porch until you return. Although we are not presently recognized as a true breed, watch for us to gain recognitin in the years ahead.
