Baseball teams have mascots, and so do football teams. High schools and colleges have 'em too, and most are made up in some silly costume that's about 125 degrees in the spring, let alone the summer. What does all of this have to do with Dapples?

Nothing, except that he's just about the greatest mascot that ever lived. And who is his team? A one-engine, two-man volunteer fire department in Montgomery County - that's me and Bob. "What good is a mascot?" you may ask. In most instances a mascot is just for show or entertainment. But in the case of Dapples, his instinctive hunting and rescue skills have helped us to save more lives than any two firemen could have done by themselves.

Dapples is more than a mascot: he's our third volunteer, a working dog. When Engine 1 responds to a call for help and it's a fire, the first thing Dapples does is check the interior for people. Tom or Bob will slip a mask onto Dapples and he fearlessly treads over hot floors and into smoke filled rooms looking for any signs of life. He's received numerous medals of valor for rescuing no less than five people from burning homes. He has also aided in the search and rescue of a missing child; pulled a piglet from a mud hole; saved a pigeon from a cat and even steered the fire truck during a hometown parade.

There is no other team, volunteer or professional, with a mascot like Dapples. No other team could benefit more by his presence, and the residents of Montgomery County have come to love and count on this hometown hero.
