We are so glad we made the decision to add a Dogue de Bordeaux (Dogue for short) to our family. Orion was named by our eldest son, who found out that the name Orion means 'hunter'. Our Orion isn't so much a hunter, but since he looks like he could be, it's a fine name. Actually, we found out Dogues were originally bred for fighting and protection. Well, we certainly feel protected when he's around. Orion is easy-going and great with our whole family, from little ones to the elders. Since we got Orion when he was a puppy, we had plenty of time to socialize him with our other pets. When you're a family of five and have three children, you're bound to have a hamster, cat, or other small pets around and of course, we did. Orion treats them like they are constantly under his protective care. He amazes me with the amount of patience he shows toward them and toward our children as well.

The kids love playing with Orion and he plays back with them. One of his favorite games is 'chase the stick'. He will bring it back, but only give it over when he's ready to, which leads to a lot of interesting exchanges between him and the kids! We live in Southern California and we all surf. Orion loves the beach and tries his best to keep up with us when we are out on the water.

I do have to warn you that Mastiffs are big dogs with huge appetites; so after all this exercise and playing he can eat, and eat, and eat. He's worth it,though and I think the world of having such a big-hearted dog that we can count on for fun and for reliable protection, too.
