I found this picture on Wikipedia's Creative Commons and it looks just like my dog Speckles. I know that this isn't him, but the resemblance is uncanny. Speckles was one of four pups of the same litter that I came to own about seven years ago. He was the only one of the four to exhibit hunting and retrieving skills to the full. It seemed to come naturally to Speckles and the enthusiasm that he showed when working was contagious. And the other dogs were inspired when they saw him at work, copying what he did.

Speckles especially loved to hunt fowl, and he had an exceptionally soft mouth. His loving nature and his respect for life was reflected in how he handled the birds. I always thought that Speckles was much more affectionate than his siblings. Although they loved to be around us, Speckles wanted to be right up next to us, with his head in our laps. He thrived on human praise and love.

When I was in a hunting accident, it was Speckles that stayed with me until help arrived. I really couldn't hunt after that, so I didn't see the value in having several hunters anymore. I decided to let my dogs go; all but one, that is: Speckles. And even though his hip dysplasia has made his limp more noticeable now and the years are showing in his face, his enthusiasm for life is still very much there. And he still loves to rest his head in my lap. I love that too.
