If there is one thing that Elsie loves to do more than anything else, it's to sniff out vermin. She especially loves to root for moles or gophers. And she is pretty good at it. However, it can be very difficult taking her on a casual walk as her nose will constantly find every little hole in the ground along the way. Her nose is constantly brown with dirt.

As keen and quite amazing as her skills are to find these yard-destroying vermin, her determination to get to them often leaves the yard more damaged than if she had left them alone. But then I suppose that since she doesn't have livestock to herd, as her kinfolk may have, this is how she exhibits her inborn desire to work. She doesn't mind staying in at night, but at the first light of day she is eager to go out and explore wherever she can.

Fortunately, we have plenty of land around us and she can make good use of it to burn off some of her limitless energy. One of the nice things about Elsie is that she doesn't depend on us to fulfill that need to work. She is very independent and can occupy herself for hours, just sniffing and digging into small holes she goes out and finds here and there. So far she has managed to stay away from snake holes and has not been bitten by anything life threatening.

I do worry a bit about that but really doubt that I could talk her out of her little hunts, unless I confined her to a dog run. That would probably kill her spirit so much that I doubt any of us would be as happy as we are now. Especially Elsie! Somehow I just can't imagine that she could find as much fun and joy in chasing a Frisbee.
