Great Pyrenees

You may have seen a Great Pyrenees before - if so, you either thought, "Gee, what a beautiful dog!" or else "Gee, what a scary dog!" People seem to say one or the other, but truth is, Great Pyrenees are both. Zowie is beautiful, but she's much more than just good looking. She's our main guard dog and she has no fear when it comes to protecting our ranch. We raise Alpaca here in Southern Arizona.

As far as people go, her size usually scares most would-be intruders off, but it's not people we worry about. She's trained to scare off coyotes and the other wildlife that may threaten our precious herds. Each Alpaca is worth anywhere from $10,000-$20,000 so we need Zowie to protect our investment. We have five other Great Pyrenees living on our ranch besides Zowie, but she's really the leader of the pack. It's said that the spine of an animal can be severed from just one bite of a Great Pyrenees. In all the years we've been running our ranch, we've never had to pick up a coyote carcass, but we believe that the coyotes are well aware of the death sentence should they roam a little too close to our flock.

Most information on the breed notes that Great Pyrenees love to dig--and that's an understatement! They have a devoted drive and ingrained instinct for digging. They can dig a hole the size of the state of Montana and we have several of them on our ranch that prove it.

I've read where many people have them as ordinary house pets, but I have a difficult time believing that this breed of dog would be happy that way. This is an outdoor working dog, pure and simple. If you have a ranch or live on an acre or two where they can roam and run, then you're probably going to be okay. Just don't forget about their need to dig!
