Kando was rescued from what surely would have been a degrading life in a dog fighting ring. Fortunately, this was done before any aggressive traits could have been brought out by his unsavory owner. With his size and strength he would have been a formidable fighter.

As it is now, he has run of our spacious yard, not because of his size and strength but because he deserves the space to run and be the great dog that he is. When I first learned of Kando's potential future I knew I had to take whatever steps were necessary to get this dog. With the help of local law enforcement, the Humane Society and the courts, Kando eventually came home with me.

Whether it's just in his nature or from his former owner's training, he can be a bit independent. He likes to do his own thing and that includes choosing when to listen and obey me and when to ignore me completely. I give him as much freedom as I can in that regard, knowing his background, while still working on his obedience training. I do see improvement so I feel we are making headway. Kando knows he can do what he wants, when he wants - but he is beginning to listen to me more and more and that is a good indication of his trust in me and his desire to please.

Kando is about as strong a dog as they make. I had my grandkids over this past week and they decided they wanted to take him for a walk on the leash. Kando is always eager to get out of the yard and explore new places. But by the time I caught up with them he had taken my grandson for a pretty good run, skinning a couple of knees along the way. All the "stop!" and "whoa!" and "heels" didn't slow him down even a little bit. It's my guess that Kando didn't even feel what he was dragging on the other end of the leash. Even so, at the end of the day, he and my grandkids were still friends.
