I always felt it'd be best to have a purebred if we were going to have a family dog at all. But then my youngest daughter was followed home one day by a stranger. After many phone calls, it was determined that this stranger was homeless. Right away, she began to call him Shaggy and refer to him as her dog.

It's a bit ironic, but Shaggy is extremely suspicious of strangers and even now, after being with us for almost two years, Shaggy will slip behind one of us when a stranger appears. Once he senses that everything is alright, he will make his presence known and will act the perfect gentleman. My daughter's doting over Shaggy is only matched by the affection and loyalty that he shows to her in return.

Shaggy is an energetic dog and really goes to great lengths to please. We guess that he never had any formal obedience training, but he's been a very quick learner. With a little repetition and an occasional reminder, he learned the basics with ease. From there, he picked up a host of other tricks and behaviors that different family members taught him. There is one exception to all that talent and obedience: housebreaking.

Since Shaggy has been fairly difficult (actually impossible) to housebreak, he remains strictly an outside pet. But that seems to suit him just fine. He loves the yard and his newly 'decorated' dog house. My daughter, also known as Shaggy's personal decorator, has given him as many comforts as possible, including treats, toys and a nice fluffy bed. In addition, she has painted his house to match ours, and added his name above the door (of his house, not ours).

Although I'm sure this mutt would never have been my first choice as a family dog, Shaggy fits in so well with us, his adopted family. He's playful and protective, and he's an excellent companion for our daughter Joy. Mystery mix of breeds that he is, he's turned out to be more than we could have hoped for in a family dog and we love him.
