Huey is extremely athletic and high energy and can get into as much trouble as any dog if not kept busy. For this reason I am constantly checking to make sure his kennel is very secure or he'll be out chasing every interesting scent the wind brings him. It's not totally his fault, mind you. After all, he's a hound and bred to hunt. Huey hates hunting by himself; he's born to hunt with a pack, which is one reason I also have three of his brothers.
Huey can be overly friendly at times, but he's never been that good playing with children. Still, he has bonded well with our family; I suppose to fill some emotional voids. He is very sensitive and that trait will show itself if he is left alone for long periods of time. He will let me know by his howls how he feels, andt will occasionally become depressed from loneliness. Since I learned this early on, I make it a point to keep all the hounds together, especially if we're gone for any length of time. They just thrive on contact, human or canine.
Huey's expression is that of a gentle dog, but it gives no hint of the amazing howl he has. It's how he calls to me and the other dogs once he has located a scent. I'm always prepared to go the distance with Huey;r he is relentless once he is onto the scent of his hunt. It's almost impossible to call him off until his quarry is found.
