Sound off one, two, sound off three, four. Bugle has the strangest bark I've ever heard. If there was ever a dog that is confused about who he is, it's Bugle. A cross between a Pug and a Beagle, he's like an adolescent going through puberty's voice change.
Sometimes he'll be part way through the howling bark of the hound and then right in the middle, it'll change to the bark of the Pug. He nearly startles himself to death when that happens, like a gawky teenage boy. It almost always shuts him up for a while (in what seems like embarrassment) before giving it another whirl. We all nearly die laughing when it happens, and I'm sure that hasn't helped his self esteem any. I'm thinking as he matures that clash in the mix will correct itself. If not, then we'll certainly have a very unique dog with a very unique voice!
Bugle has a sweet and affectionate way about him, as do most puppies. But he is different, somehow. He wants to be right there in the middle of the group, yet he is often pulled away by his hound side to explore all that he can. We see this inner struggle going on and as cute as it is now I hope it doesn't develop into any behavior problems or identity disorders later. I'm hopeful he'll settle into becoming an energetic dog that just loves to be around people.
He'll have to learn how to balance his urges, that's all. Smell and explore sometimes, sit and be a part of the group other times. With a little help from his friends he'll be able to avoid becoming frustrated. Right now, he's living up to our expectations of being a great family dog and all in the family absolutely adore him.
