What can I say about Bernie? This active little puppy will mature into an active hound. By 'hound' I'm referencing his ability for tracking and hunting. This is one sport that Bernie dearly loves. He's born and bred with the desire to chase after and run small animals up trees, so it's best to avoid sharing his space with a cat or other small pets. He'll drive them (and you) crazy while having a himself a real blast. He won't rest until he's chased them and treed them. Trust me, hamsters, cats, gerbils, rabbits -- they don't like this experience one bit!. As both a pup and an adult, A Redbone Coonhound will exhibit a lot of energy.

Although Bernie can adapt quickly to any surroundings, even to life in an apartment, he needs plenty of exercise no matter the size of his home, and will need his daily runs. So unless a daily long trip to the park is in your schedule, a large yard is a must. Bernie has a strong desire to roam. Every breath he takes includes scent of many different things he could chase, so a leash is a must in town. Of course, out in the country on a farm or ranch will suit Bernie just fine. He is a superior 'sniffer' and loves the water and often is a much faster tracker than his hunting counterparts.

This affectionate and loyal Coonhound loves family and plays well with children. However, very small children may get knocked down inadvertently by this over exuberant pup. Other than grooming, Bernie is relatively low maintenance. The breed is given to obesity if not exercised enough daily. He is a joy to watch play and sniff as he runs through the outdoors, so he's a perfect camping buddy. His bark can, at times, be heard for miles. This can act as a dog-finder if you have misplaced him or a neighbor time-to-wake-up call, depending on the vicinity of Bernie at the time of his bark. Of course, Bernie isn't really available - as this is my dog. But you can find your own Bernie from a Redbone Coonhound breeder.
