By the time I got Biscuit he was already a mature three-year old retriever. He had been trained and used for quail hunting, primarily. It took Biscuit and me a few months to really start bonding, but then, all of a sudden it hit us. He is such a loyal dog that I think he was hanging on to the memory of his previous owner. But now I'm the owner that he hangs onto.
There have never been any doubts about Biscuit's ability as a retriever. He works with all the proper restraints of a good bird dog and has one of the softest mouths of any bird dog I've ever owned.
Biscuit exhibits a high level of intelligence: even at his age he picks up new commands and tasks very quickly. Sometimes he loses focus and acts as if he doesn't understand, but a slight scolding is all that is needed to get him back on track and it becomes apparent to me that he was just momentarily distracted.
With me only hunting in quail season, it leaves plenty of time for Biscuit to find other ways to keep himself entertained. He generally likes going to the park with the kids and playing some 'retrieve the ball,' but he especially likes going camping with us.
During the summer you can find him most evenings laying in the front porch swing, just taking it easy.
